Why do carpets sometimes buckle after they are cleaned?
Sometimes after carpet cleaning, a carpet may buckle or form waves over it. We also call them wrinkles.
I have seen this on carpets as new as one year and older.
Old carpets backing eventually delaminates and it is no longer sturdy and bubbles form in the affected area. it delaminates, meaning the backings separate because of tear and wear, dragging furniture over it, not frequently cleaning, not power stretched initially, over wetting, flood, oil or petroleum distillate spilled on it, floor heating, etc.
When the carpet has delaminated, it is a problem waiting to happen, then during cleaning the carpet can become looser. I have seen this happen to fairly new carpets and older carpets. Heavy use also can make carpet loose. on commercial carpets, sometimes the glue breaks away from the concrete and you can also get some pretty scary bubbles.
If you see your carpet bubble up after cleaning, avoid walking on it for your safety and carpets well being. I have noticed that Berber or woven carpets almost always bubble and usually it goes flat after it dries. If you already have bubbles, cleaning will not reverse the problem. Having the carpet power stretched is the best solution. It seems to work better to have it stretched after cleaning and then maybe clean it again to effectively remove dirt lines where the bubbles were. If stretching is no longer an option, then replace the carpet.
